Pleasant Hill custody dispute ends in shootout, child injured

PLEASANT HILL – A 27-year-old man and a 7-year-old child were injured when a custody dispute ended in a shootout Monday morning in Pleasant Hill, according to authorities.

Officers were called around 11:50 a.m. to the area of Contra Costa Boulevard and Vivian Drive for reports of gunshots, the Pleasant Hill Police Department said in a news release. They quickly located three vehicles that were involved in the incident.

The 27-year-old man, who was driving one of the vehicles, was hit in the hand by the gunfire and the 7-year-old child, who was inside one the vehicles, suffered minor injuries, according to authorities. Both were treated at area hospitals and released.

An investigation revealed the incident started as a custody dispute between the parents of the child.

“The occupants of two of the vehicles exchanged gunfire with one another at close range,” police said in the news release.

The 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, shooting at an occupied vehicle and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. A 38-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Both were booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.

Contra Costa Boulevard was closed to traffic for several hours while authorities investigated the incident.
