Car crash into Northeast Portland home causes gas fire, displaces residents

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Some Portlanders are out of a home after a car crashed into a house, broke a gas line and started a fire on Christmas Eve, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Just before 11:15 p.m., crews responded to reports of the vehicle crashing into the front of the home near Northeast 24th and Weidler Street, after officials said the driver failed to navigate into a turn.

Crews say they soon found a NW Natural gas line had been hit, which caused the flames to shoot into the air and give the appearance that the fire was covering the entire home.

However, officials said the main body of the fire only covered one side of the home, leaving little structural damage.

Crews kept hoses trained above the flames, while they came up with a plan to clamp the gas line, authorities said.

It took about an hour to get the fire and gas line under control.

A pet was rescued from the home and no injuries were reported. However, at least one resident was displaced due to the fire.
