Montrose 1 Queen’s Park 0

0

Queen’s Park ended the year with a narrow defeat as their trip to Montrose finished 1-0 during match-day 17 of the ScottishPower WPL 1 2024/25 season.

Lauren McGregor and Olivia King made their 40th and 30th appearances for the club respectively with starts at a windy Links Park.

McGregor was called into action with nine minutes on the clock, as she saved a well-struck Louise Brown shot from inside the penalty area at a difficult angle.

Queen’s Park looked set to open the scoring just shy of the fifteen minute mark, after a mix up in the Montrose defence almost fell perfectly for Ami Robertson but the ball was cleared and put behind for a corner.

Montrose continued their search for their first goal as Neve Guthrie looked ready to pick up a great long ball but Lauren McGregor was there first to deter her. The ball fell to London Pollard who hit the ball first time, resulting in it sailing up and over the bar.

The battle for the opener continued as The Spiders looked to change the scoreline, however, a last ditch tackle from of Cassie Cowper would prevent Megan Quigley from shooting.

With two minutes left in the half, a wind-assisted corner would almost help Montrose find the back of the net, but a quick reaction and good save from McGregor prevented the goal.

Half Time: Montrose 0-0 Queen’s Park

Montrose looked to keep momentum going at the start of the second with a good bit of build-up play but a poor pass halted this attack.

The match continued to be competitive and end to end as both sides looked to end the year with maximum points. Unfortunately, it would be Montrose with the opening goal in the 70th minute, after a coming together which involved Lauren McGregor and Louise Brown saw the ball slip from between them and end up in the back of the net.

The coming together resulted in Lauren McGregor receiving treatment but would be unable to continue and was replaced by Lucy Inman with twenty minutes left to play.

Montrose would have the last chance of the match via Louise Brown. Brown was unable to convert the cross as it slipped narrowly past the post.

The Spiders now enter the Winter Break, and will begin 2025 with a tough test as they host Rangers in ScottishPower WPL 1 action. The match will be played on the 12th January with a 12.30PM kick-off.
