Harlem community comes together for annual Christmas Day event hosted by NAN
NEW YORK (PIX11) – The National Action Network continued its cherished holiday tradition on Christmas Day, hosting its annual dinner and toy giveaway at the House of Justice in Harlem.
The event united community members, volunteers, and local officials to serve needy families.
The day began with gratitude.
"We pray that you will bless the food and fellowship that we're about to receive,” this prayer set the tone for a day filled with warmth and community spirit.
Marlene Stringfellow, a senior and long-time Harlem resident, has attended NAN's holiday events for about ten years. When asked why she keeps returning, Stringfellow explained, "Because I come every year and after I can have the best of food and, and I do not cook."
The event offered a variety of dishes to satisfy every palate.
Stringfellow described her plate as "Collard greens, string beans, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, peas, and rice."When asked if she had a little bit of everything, she happily confirmed, "Yes, I have."
While adults enjoyed their meals, children received gifts. One young attendee excitedly shared his haul: "An RC car, another RC car, and a soccer ball."
"It's, uh, everything that our Sharpton does for us. I mean, he is for his people, he's for us," Stringfellow reflected on the event's significance. For many, like Stringfellow, the annual Christmas Day event is more than just a meal - it's a lifeline for Harlem's families.
Mayor Eric Adams joined Reverend Al Sharpton in serving food to the community.
"I see them, I understand what they're going through and we are able to make a connection,’ Adams emphasized the importance of connecting with residents.
“A lot of people tell me some of the problems they are having when I'm on the line and I refer them to government. But you never be a good shepherd if you are not among the sheep. I have to be out here among everyday people."
The National Action Network has been organizing this event for years, providing a warm meal and holiday cheer to those who need it most.
