Jim Larranaga Steps Down At Miami

Hard to blame him

Saying he was exhausted and tired of the NIL environment, Miami’s Jim Larranaga called it career Thursday, effective immediately. Here’s what he said:

“I’m exhausted, I’ve tried every which way to keep this going. And I know I’m going to be asked a lot of questions and I want to answer them before I’m even asked. What shocked me, beyond belief, was after we made it to the Final Four just 18 months ago, the first time I met with the players, eight of them decided they were going to put their name in the [transfer] portal and leave.”

Larranaga is just the latest coach to give up in face of all the new changes involving NIL and the new transfer rule. Virginia’s Tony Bennett, Villanova’s Jay Wright and Alabama football coach Nick Saban all retired for the same reason. Even Mike Krzyzewski cited the challenges of getting new talent as part of his reason for retiring.

Whether it’s the NCAA or some other structure, college sports needs to figure this out. The players are incredibly important, but so are coaches, and if the best coaches continue to walk away, basketball and football will continue to suffer.
