NYS Senator Dan Stec hopes to run for 21st Congressional District

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- North Country Republican State Senator Dan Stec hopes to be considered for New York's 21st Congressional District once a vacancy becomes available. Stec told NEWS10 that he has already shared his interest with party leaders.

Currently, the seat is held by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who was re-elected in November. Days after the November election, President-elect Donald Trump chose Stefanik to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations.

According to Stec, it is up to party leaders to choose a candidate for the seat when there is a vacancy. But he believes that he can do the job.

"I’ve been meeting with the chairs. There’s a process. A lot of people are doing the same thing, meeting with the chairs. I imagine it’s happening on both sides of the equation," Stec said. "The Democrats are going to do something similar. So, I’ve made the chairs aware of my interest and my argument, you know, that not only can I do the job, I’ve proven I can do the job."

Before a special election can happen, President-elect Trump must be sworn into office. Once in office, the new Senate must then confirm Stefanik for the ambassador position.
