Second baseman Gleyber Torres has agreed to a one-year deal worth $15 million with the Detroit Tigers, taking another infielder off the board in free agency.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported that Torres and the Tigers were in agreement on a contract while Jesse Rogers of ESPN was first with the financial details.

Torres had a down 2024 season with the New York Yankees, hitting .257/.330/.378 with 15 home runs, 63 RBI and four stolen bases. Defensively, he posted below average marks across the board with -11 Defensive Runs Saved and -7 Outs Above Average at second.

Detroit is hoping Torres can return to his 2023 form, particularly with his bat, as he slashed .273/.347/.453 with 25 home runs, 68 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

The Tigers have been rumored to be in on third baseman Alex Bregman, and since Colt Keith has been getting reps at first base, the former is likely still a possibility for Detroit as Torres is expected to stick at second base.

Torres mentioned that he would only be interested in playing second base and had no interest in moving to third, which may have affected his market. In fact, Heyman reported that he turned down a potential opportunity with the Washington Nationals due to the fact that they planned on placing him at the hot corner.

MMO’s Kai Chang previously wrote a free agent profile on Torres that can be viewed here.
