Snow protection technique returns to the Portland Japanese Garden

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The Portland Japanese Garden is protecting its trees with the art of "yukizuri" which hasn't been seen in the garden since the 1980s.

Winter weather isn't guaranteed in Portland this winter, but in the event that snow does fall, the Portland Japanese Garden will be ready. The art of "yukizuri" is a way in which the garden can help ease the weight of winter weather on the delicate limbs of the garden.

"Yukizuri are aesthetically pleasing support systems that protect and prepare trees for winter—yuki means “snow” and zuri or tsuri means “lifting.” In this we understand how they help protect trees: Straw ropes are cast down from a central pole, almost like the frame of an umbrella. The ropes are then tied to branches to help lift them up with the thought being they’ll better withstand the weight of heavy snowfall or frost," said Will Learner, communications manager for the Portland Japanese Garden.

So, the delicate limbs of the garden will be prepared for any weather event that is thrown at Portland this winter season.
