Mother of murdered Plaquemine man speaks out on wanted suspect with ties to Lafayette: 'He's dangerous'

LOUISIANA (KLFY) -- The mother of a murdered Plaquemine man is hoping someone in Acadiana can help find her son's accused killer. Authorities say the wanted suspect has ties to the Lafayette area.

The mother of Ja'Morius Mitchell, 18, reported him missing on Dec. 12. His burned body was found in a sugarcane field in a nearby town a week later on Dec. 18.

Two suspects, one from Sunset, have been arrested, but the last suspect has still yet to be located.

"I don't want anyone else to go through what I'm dealing with. It's so much violence in our community that people like that just need to be stopped. Nobody should be hurt. My child, my family, we need justice," Jessica Mitchell, the victim's mother, said.

Tyler Davis, 18, is wanted for second-degree murder and obstruction of justice after authorities found the body of Ja'Morius Mitchell, 18, burned in a sugarcane field in Addis.

Wanted: Tyler Davis

Davis is now on the run, though authorities say he has ties to Lafayette.

"Be careful. He's dangerous. Protect your children. You see him, don't approach him. Call the police. Let them do what they've been trained to do," Ja'Morius's mother said.

Sterling Powell, 18, of Sunset was arrested for principal to second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. A Brusly man, 23-year-old Devonte Johnson, was arrested on the same charges.

Tyler Davis, who allegedly killed Ja'Morius, is still on the run and may be in Acadiana. Ja'Morius's mother said she hopes he's found soon.

"It would bring me a sense of peace. Knowing that he's not out there to hurt anybody else," Jessica Mitchell said.

The victim's mother added, "I would say to him to turn himself in, to do the right thing, you know, you did something that was just wrong. It was cruel, but all in all, I'm not mad at you. I just want you to just turn yourself in and just do what's right."

Anyone with information on Davis's whereabouts is urged to contact the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office at 225-343-9234 or Captial Region Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP (7867).
