Centenarian journalist Eileen Lavine continues to work at 100
NEW YORK (PIX11)—More than 100,000 people over the age of 100 live in the U.S. today. But how many of them are still working?
Meet Eileen Lavine, a working journalist who was born in 1924.
PIX11 News asked Ms. Lavine what the secret to her longevity is.
“It’s being active, being concerned, and being interested in other people,” Lavine told PIX11 News.
Lavine is Moment Magazine's Senior Editor. She edits from her assisted living facility at 305 West End.
Colleagues, family, and friends gathered there to celebrate Eileen Lavine's 100 years young.
And what a life Eileen has led for the first 100 years. She was married for 57 of them, traveled the world, wrote her life story, and now lives on the Upper West Side within nine blocks of her two children.
“We spend a lot of time together. It’s really nice,” Amy Lavine, her daughter, told PIX11 News. “It’s really pleasant. Drama free. That’s the key to my mother, no drama.”
As Eileen’s son, cabaret performer Michael Lavine serenaded her with her favorite, “September Song,” her boss at Moment Magazine spoke about how much she mentors and influences the much younger generations she works with.
“She brings so much wisdom and perspective to our editorial meetings,” Nadine Epstein, the editor-in-chief of Moment Magazine, told PIX11 News. “It’s an incredible joy to have her on the staff,” she added.
With no health issues, just a pacemaker, Eileen Lavine’s friends and family are already planning her 101st birthday party next year.
“And I am looking forward to all the days leading up to that birthday,” Lavine told PIX11 News.
