Former president Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, reports AP News. He was the longest-living U.S. president and died about a year after his wife, Rosalynn. Born in 1924, Carter grew up as a peanut farmer and was the first president born in a hospital. After graduating college and marrying Rosalynn, he went on to join the Naval Academy and eventually became the governor of Georgia before moving on to become the 39th president of the United States in 1977. While he lost re-election to Ronald Reagan in 1980, he remained a strong political figure and humanitarian in the U.S., eventually earning a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love, ” Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said in a statement with the Carter Center. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Below are some tributes from President Joe Biden, former presidents, political figures and more.
