$10.3 million allocated during special New Iberia council meeting
NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- The New Iberia City Council members gathered for one last special meeting before the new year to discuss and finalize budget allocations for the American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA, funds given to the city.
The city received $10.3 million from ARPA.
New Iberia Mayor Freddie DuCourt said receiving funds from ARPA allowed the city's council to take on projects to revitalize communities in New Iberia.
"We came up with a plan four years ago, $10.3 million, many of it was spread out through the community," he said.
During the discussion, funds were finalized on how they would be allocated to every project, with alternate projects as backup if needed.
DeCourt said some of the funds were allocated for projects to deal with blighted properties, repairing roofs, the city's sewer and drainage system, and the steamboat pavilion in downtown, among other things.
District 2 Councilman Marlon Lewis said he's confident every project that was taken on and allocated funding for will be completed.
"I'm very confident that the projects that we selected are going to be carried out. We have a great mayor, we have a good new council, and we have some former members that were there with us putting this together. I'm very confident that it's going to be completed," Lewis said.
DeCourt said it was his goal to utilize everything given to the city and he feels it's very important the council "took advantage of it to the fullest."
