Here's how Ohio's minimum wage is changing on New Year's Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Starting New Year's Day, Ohioans will see a 30-cent increase in minimum wage.

As of Jan. 1, Ohio's minimum wage for nontipped employees will be $10.70 per hour instead of $10.45, and tipped employees will make $5.35 per hour, rather than $5.25. The Ohio Department of Commerce said the increase will apply to employees of businesses that make more than $394,000 in gross receipts per year.

The minimum wage paid by businesses that make less than $394,000 annually, and earned by 14- and 15-year-old employees, follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25. For 2024, the minimum wage applied to businesses that brought in at least $385,000 annually in gross receipts.

The change is thanks to a 2006 Ohio Constitutional Amendment, which states minimum wage should be adjusted for inflation annually. According to the Ohio Department of Commerce, the minimum wage is tied to the Consumer Price Index over a 12-month period before September. Thus, the wage for 2025 was set in September 2024.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, Ohio is one of 30 states with a higher minimum wage than the federal wage, but one of just six states that differentiates minimum wages between tipped and non-tipped employees.
