Mega Millions jackpot made over $55M for NY schools, retailers

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A top prize-winning Mega Millions ticket worth around $1.22 billion was sold in California last week. Although the jackpot win came from out of state, the New York Lottery reported that $55.8 million was generated for schools and retailers in New York through ticket sales and commissions.

The multi-state jackpot started building on September 13 and grew until the December 27 drawing. During the rollup period, sales in New York produced over $47.6 million for public schools through New York Lottery aid, and lottery retailers made $8.2 million, including numerous small businesses.

"New York’s schools and small businesses always win, even if the lottery jackpot is hit elsewhere," said New York State Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer. "The New York Lottery generates significant revenue for public education and lottery retailers statewide, and we are proud to deliver on that mission."

Lottery players in New York won 75 Mega Millions prizes throughout the rollup. Winnings included four $1 million second prize winners and 71 third prize winners ranging between $10,000 and $40,000.
