Mother of abandoned baby surrenders to police in the Bronx: NYPD
THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A 26-year-old woman is facing multiple charges in connection with a baby that was left in a tote bag outside a Bronx residence on Sunday, according to police.
Police charged Bronx resident Delfina Galvez with abandonment of a child, first-degree reckless endangerment, and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The woman turned herself into authorities on Monday night just before 10 p.m.
The baby was found wrapped in blankets inside a tote bag just after 6 a.m. on Sunday, police said. The days-old infant had been left outside a residence on Rev. James A Polite Avenue.
A Good Samaritan who lived nearby brought the baby into his home for safety and called the police. The child has since been taken to the hospital where it is in the care of medical staff.
Under New York’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, people can anonymously abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days old but there are some stipulations. The baby must be left at a safe place, like a hospital or firehouse, and the parent has to notify someone of the baby’s location.
