Pakistan police detain and deport over 70 Afghan nationals
Pakistani security forces have announced the detention and deportation of 72 Afghan citizens who lacked legal residency documents. The individuals were arrested at the Chagai border crossing for unlawfully entering Pakistan.
According to a report by Dawn newspaper on Wednesday, January 1, the Afghan nationals were detained in the Chagai region of Balochistan. The report cites security officials, confirming that these individuals had entered Pakistan illegally.
In 2024, Pakistan’s border personnel conducted approximately 10 joint operations, resulting in the arrest of 3,826 Afghan nationals, including 2,779 men, 338 women, and 290 children, in the Chagai border areas.
Pakistani authorities have emphasized that they have increased security measures in border areas with Afghanistan to prevent illegal migration.
Despite ongoing international pressure, the deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan continues.
According to Pakistani security officials, the migrants had entered Pakistan “illegally” and were sent back to Afghanistan after investigations.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that in 2024, more than 1.2 million Afghan migrants returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan, highlighting the ongoing displacement crisis in the region.
This ongoing trend of deportations and arrests of Afghan migrants in Pakistan underscores the growing challenges faced by displaced Afghan populations, particularly in neighboring countries. Many of these individuals have fled Afghanistan due to insecurity, economic instability, and lack of opportunities, only to face further hardship and uncertainty in their host countries.
The situation continues to draw attention from international human rights organizations, which are calling for more humane and coordinated responses to the migration crisis. As Afghanistan faces its own internal challenges, the return of millions of Afghan migrants poses additional strains on the country’s already fragile infrastructure and resources.
