TOPEKA (KSNT) - Meteorologists with a local National Weather Service (NWS) station are reporting that Topeka nearly broke a record for high temperatures in 2024.

The NWS station in Topeka reported on social media on Jan. 1 that the City of Topeka got close to hitting a record for warm temperatures in 2024. NWS meteorologists checked through historic temperature records going back to 1887, finding that last year was the second-warmest for Topeka.

"The average temperature of 3 of the 4 seasons of the year ranked in the top six on record. Total precipitation was slightly below normal."

The NWS reported that 2024 fell behind the record-holder, 2012, by a single degree. Topeka had an average temperature of nearly 60 degrees throughout 2012 with the months of March through to July showing the highest temperatures above normal, according to the NWS website.
