Patrick Chludzinski sworn in as assemblyman for 143rd district

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Republican Patrick Chludzinski was sworn in Wednesday at the Lancaster Opera House as the new assemblyman for New York's 143rd district, which includes Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Depew, Sloan and parts of Buffalo.

Chludzinski, a Sloan native and Cheektowaga resident, upset Democrat Monica Wallace's bid for her fifth term in the state assembly in November.

In an interview with WIVB News 4 Wednesday, Chludzinski listed affordability as his main priority as he heads into office.

"We're seeing record numbers of people leaving New York state to head to other states for better opportunities," he said. "A lot of it has to do with taxation in New York state, general affordability and people are just tired of what they're seeing out of the Albany government and how it's affecting and impacting their daily lives."

As a first-time candidate, Chludzinski boasted his public safety record as a detective lieutenant in the Cheektowaga Police Department’s Youth and Family Offense Unit, a position he’s held since 2022. He is also a decorated veteran of the United States Army and has served in the Army National Guard. 

In June of last year, Chludzinski called on New York City Mayor Eric Adams and state leaders to reimburse the Maryvale Schools District for its acceptance of nearly 80 migrant children at the beginning of the school year. 

He said his close ties with the community make him the best person for the seat.

"I had been embedded in this community since I was a young child. I know the community well," Chludzinksi said. "I know the folks that live here, neighbors, friends — I know the issues that are impacting them and I hear their issues and I feel them too."
