Otto Table & Chairs
Otto Table & Chairs is a minimalist design designed by Los Angeles-based studio Willett. The design’s most striking feature lies in its clever geometric harmony: when the chairs are tucked in, their curved backs align perfectly with the table’s cylindrical supports, creating the illusion of a classical colonnade supporting the minimalist tabletop. This thoughtful integration transforms what could be separate furniture pieces into a unified sculptural whole.
The design achieves this effect through innovative use of bent plywood – a material deeply rooted in modern furniture history since the Eames era. Each element, from the table’s supports to the chairs’ curved backs, shares the same circumference, finished in luminous copper-toned veneer with precise black edge banding. This precision creates a rhythmic foundation that seems to float beneath the surface.
Working from his Los Angeles Arts District base, Willett represents a new wave of American design that acknowledges its modernist heritage while pushing into fresh territory. The Otto Table & Chairs exemplifies what he calls “something quietly new” – innovation that reveals itself through careful attention to detail and proportion. In this case, it’s the subtle transformation from functional dining set to architectural sculpture that occurs with a simple push of a chair, demonstrating how contemporary furniture can transcend its utilitarian origins while maintaining perfect functionality.
