Northeast Kansas county offices announce closures for National Day of Mourning

NORTHEAST KANSAS (KSNT) - Local county offices are announcing closures following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter in late December 2024.

The Riley County and the Shawnee County District Court announced closures for Jan. 9 following the death of Carter.

Riley County announced in a press release on Jan. 2 that the Riley County District Court, the Riley County Transfer Station and emergency medical services will still be available during the closure. All other offices will close on Jan. 9 and reopen on Friday, Jan. 10.

“President Carter embodied the ideals of service, humility, and compassion,” said John Ford, chairman of the Riley County Board of County Commissioners. “We honor his memory and contributions to our nation by observing this day of mourning and reflection.”

Lea Welch with the Third Judicial District of Kansas announced in a press release on Jan. 2 that the Shawnee County District Court will be closed for Jan. 9. Her announcement did not include the Shawnee County Courthouse or other Shawnee County offices.

President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning following the 39th president's death and ordered flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days. Actions were taken by the federal government and Governor Laura Kelly to honor the Carter.

Kelly announced on Dec. 31 that she signed an executive order declaring Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, to be a Day of Mourning for Carter. State of Kansas offices will be closed for this day.
