GOP superintendent says 'radical left' is making schools into 'terrorist training camps'

Far-right Oklahoma state superintendent Ryan Walters appeared to suggest in a video posted to X on Thursday that the "radical left" is using schools to create more terrorists like the perpetrators of the horrific attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas this week.

"What a terrible day when we see terrorist attacks on American soil," said Walters, in a video shot from the interior of his car. "It's absolutely tragic and we've got to look as a country on how these things happen. We absolutely have to shut down the border, we can't allow terrorists to come across the border."

There is no evidence any of these attacks were facilitated by someone crossing the border.

The New Orleans attack was perpetrated by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S.-born citizen from Texas and Army combat veteran, authorities have said. In Las Vegas, authorities said Matthew Livelsberger, of Colorado Springs, blew up a Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump International Hotel Livelsberger was also an Army veteran.

"We also have to take a look at how are these terrorists coming from people that live in America?" said Walters. "And, you know, you have schools that are teaching kids to hate their country, that this country is evil, you have the teachers' unions pushing this on our kids, the radical left wants people to hate this country. They've completely destroyed the integrity of the FBI by making them more concerned about DEI than about protecting Americans. It's a major part of this. And look, this is a real uncomfortable truth, and I know the left is going to lose their mind, but listen: we cannot allow our schools to be terrorist training camps. We cannot allow our schools to teach our kids to hate this country. We cannot allow our kids to teach [sic] that this is an evil country."

Walters said that's why they're "getting back to the basics" in Oklahoma.

"To make sure that our kids love this country, understand American values, understand the role that the Constitution, the Bible, the Declaration of Independence played in American history. Because we want patriots, and that's going to be the focus of our schools," he said.

This is not the first time that Walters, who has recently come under fire for having Oklahoma schools stock Trump-promoted "God Bless the USA Bibles," has made similar accusations. Last year, he called teachers' unions "terrorist organizations."

Walters has also hired Chaya Raichik, creator of the infamous anti-LGBTQ "Libs of TikTok" account, to advise the state on school library policies, despite the fact that she has been accused of inspiring terroristic threats against schools.

Oklahoma has consistently ranked near the bottom among states for the quality of its education system; more than a year into Walters' tenure as the top education official in the state, the most recent statistics placed Oklahoma's schools at 49th in the country.
