Syrian Transitional Govt delegation arrives in Riyadh on first foreign visit

Asaad al-Shibani, Syria’s Foreign Minister, and the Minister of Defense of the Syrian Interim Government arrived in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, leading a delegation.

According to the Syrian state news agency, citing a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation headed by Asaad al-Shibani arrived in the Saudi capital on the evening of Wednesday, January 2, for its first official visit.

Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia is the first foreign destination for the Syrian interim government’s delegation.

Previously, al-Shibani had announced that he received an invitation from Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan to visit the kingdom and had accepted the invitation.

A week ago, a high-level Saudi delegation visited Syria and met with Ahmed al-Shara, known as Abu Muhammad al-Jolani. Al-Jolani also gave his first TV interview since the fall of Damascus to Al Arabiya, a Saudi news network, where he stated that Saudi Arabia is seeking stability in Syria and plays an important role in Syria’s future.

Meanwhile, last month, a Saudi delegation had met with Ahmed al-Shara, the new leader of Syria in Damascus.

Earlier, al-Shara had told Al Arabiya in an interview that Saudi Arabia would play a very significant role in Syria, emphasizing that Saudi Arabia would certainly have a large role in Syria’s future and would participate in the development that Syria is seeking.

The visit of Syria’s interim government delegation to Saudi Arabia marks a significant step in the growing diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Saudi government’s involvement in Syria’s future underscores its influence in regional stability and the reconstruction efforts in Syria.
