Freight train derails after bridge collapses into Corvallis river

0

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A railroad bridge collapsed after a freight train attempted to cross it, releasing an unknown amount of cargo into the Marys River in Corvallis early Saturday afternoon, Corvallis police said.

The incident was first reported just after 12 p.m. and police and fire crews responded to the bridge crossing near Avery Park.

When they arrived, they found the trestle had collapsed after a 19-car freight train was crossing.

As reported by the Corvallis Gazette-Times, a spokesperson for Portland & Western Railroad said one car that derailed into the river was carrying urea, a chemical compound used in skin care products and fertilizer.

As a result, police said an ecological recovery company deployed floating barriers to filter out any possible leaked materials.

Although no injuries were reported, people are encouraged to avoid the area for the duration of the investigation.

Officials are also recommending not entering the Marys River until further notice as "unknown debris" is likely in the water.

The cause of the collapse has not been released at this time.

This is a developing story. Stay with KOIN 6 News for updates.
