NICU Nurse in Virginia Arrested for Abuse of Newborn Babies, Including Fractured Bones
A NICU nurse in Virginia was arrested and booked into Henrico County Jail on Friday on charges of child abuse and malicious wounding to babies.
The accused, 26-year-old Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, is the prime suspect in injuries including fractured bones, on newborn babies.
The initial findings were perplexing to staff, so as a precaution, the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond decided to stop taking new patients to the NICU by late December.
Virginia police have arrested a registered nurse in connection with a twisted attack that left a vulnerable newborn in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit with an “unexplainable fracture” in November – and additional charges could come as detectives continue to probe a half dozen similar incidents.
The 26-year-old suspect, Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, was booked into the Henrico County Jail on charges of malicious wounding and child abuse that caused serious injury around 1:15 a.m. Friday.
A perplexing string of injuries to babies in the NICU at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond in November and December prompted officials to launch an internal investigation and close the unit to new patients on Christmas Eve.
“Public records show Strotman’s registered nurse’s license was first issued in 2019 and is valid until May 2026,” Fox News Reported.
The hospital stated that in November and December, they found that three babies had fractures that could not be explained. They also stated that in 2023, there were four babies that had similar injuries as well.
One of the fathers, Dominique Hackey, whose son was a victim, had expressed regret for not speaking out sooner regarding what had happened to his child. His son had a fractured tibia in 2023, and the baby’s mother had called social services to report the injury. She also had previous experience as a NICU nurse.
The hospital had added safety measures including staff being accompanied by another doctor or staff member and doctors conducting exams on the patients to ensure safety and to look for signs of abuse.
