Nassau County to fly flags at half-staff for former President Carter's death

0

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A New York county that hadn't been flying flags at half-staff following former President Jimmy Carter's death announced on Sunday it's planning to do so.

"The flags in Nassau County will be at half-staff for President Carter from the commencement of Lying in State on January 7th through burial on January 9th," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said in a statement to PIX11 News.

The executive was accused by a lawmaker of refusing to fly flags at half-staff.

"Whether it’s pettiness, laziness, or pure ignorance, Nassau deserves a county executive who understands that honoring a former president transcends partisan politics," said Nassau County Legislator Seth Koslow on Friday.

President Joe Biden issued a proclamation to fly flags at half-staff at all federal buildings and grounds for 30 days after Carter's passing at 100 years old. It ends on Jan. 28, which is after President-elect Donald Trump will take office.
