Ring reveals smart smoke alarm that warns you about blaze when you’re out – and it can even call fire services
RING is launching a new smoke alarm that will warn you about a blaze even when you’re away from home.
You can even upgrade it with a special feature for contacting the fire service.
You’ll receive alerts about smoke even if you’re far away from home[/caption]There are two new products on offer: a Smart Smoke Alarm, and a Combination Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm.
Amazon-owned Ring has teamed up with home-fire brand Kidde to build the products.
And they’ll link up with the Ring app, just like the regular Ring cameras or doorbells.
If the alarm detects a problem, you’ll be automatically alerted via the Ring app.
“We are making it easy for people to stay closer to the things that matter most to them,” said Ring’s Charlie French.
“And safety of their homes and loved ones is chief among that.
“We’re ecstatic to bring Ring to a new part of the house.”
If you pay for the new Ring 24/7 Smoke & CO Monitoring subscription, trained agents can requested emergency help on your behalf.
And they can even alert your emergency contacts if an alarm is detected.
The subscription costs $5 a month in the US, which is about £4.
Sadly there’s no word on a UK launch for this gadget yet, but Ring has a wide range of devices on sale in Britain so it’s possible.
The gadget is due to launch in the US in spring, and will come in fairly cheap compared to rivals.
The regular smoke alarm will set you back $54.97 (£43.94) – while the combined alarm with carbon monoxide detection costs $74.97 (£59.93).
Kidde, which manufactures the gadgets, says that offers “enhanced” sensing.
The Ring smoke alarm comes in a regular variant – or one that also detects carbon monoxide[/caption]It claims that this is 25% faster and three times more precise for smoke detection compared to “leading competitors”.
“The devices’ advanced technology also reduces false alarms often caused by cooking,” Kidde added.
“Which helps prevent consumers from disabling their alarms – and putting themselves at higher risk.”
Another benefit of the gadgets is that you’ll be warned that your smoke alarm is running low on battery seven days before it starts beeping.
TECH A CHANCE ON IT!
Here’s what The Sun’s tech editor Sean Keach thinks…
Flashy tech is great: who doesn’t love a new PlayStation, a massive speaker, or a posh 4K telly?
But it’s tech like this – a smart smoke alarm – that is really worth the money.
This could genuinely save your property from significant damage.
More importantly, it could even save lives.
It’s hard to put a price on that (although Ring obviously has).
Honestly, it’s the same story with fitness trackers like the Apple Watch that can detect life-threatening illnesses.
Investing in these types of products can have a very real effect on your life, and change it for the better.
I was incredibly impressed with last year’s Apple AirPods update that allowed them to detect hearing loss.
And Ring doorbells need no introduction: they’re a brilliant tool for deterring or catching criminals.
I know we can all get a bit tech fatigued, but sometimes it’s worth forking out a bit of cash to help boost your health and safety.
That’s a big deal if you hate the chirping noise prompting you to replace the batteries.
You’ll have plenty of time to swap them out before the beeping begins.
