Wedge House

0

Wedge House is a minimal home located in Montreal, Canada, designed by Wedge. In 2019, a visit to Copenhagen planted the seed for what would become Wedge House. Inspired by the communal energy at the office of FRAMA, the furniture brand run by their friend Niels Strøyer Christophersen, Justin and Sarah envisioned a space for their Montreal-based team that fostered a similar sense of connection. That idea crystallized during a moment at Apollo Bar, where the couple began imagining how to translate the warmth they felt in Copenhagen into their own work environment. Months later, Sarah sketched a conceptual design for the space. When Justin stumbled upon a local property listing featuring a facade strikingly similar to her drawing, the idea took on tangible form.

The interior needed significant renovations, but the potential was unmistakable. They moved forward, acquiring the property and reimagining it as a space that merges the familiarity of home with the functionality of a creative studio. The building, gutted to comply with local historical preservation laws, was stripped to its facade. The goal was clear: create a ground floor that felt domestic and a second floor that served as a workspace—eschewing the sterile phone booths and fluorescent lights of their previous agency jobs. Upon entering, the library sets the tone with its serene palette of aluminum, light wood, and subdued blue and yellow accents.

The kitchen features a 12-foot-long custom table, stained red in a nod to Apollo Bar, inviting the team to gather in a communal setting. The living room hosts the first “Wedge Sofa,” designed by Justin in collaboration with Thom Fougere. The design draws from 1970s Scandinavian pine sofas and references Copenhagen’s SMK Museum. Practical details, such as armrests wide enough to hold a book or teacup, reflect Sarah’s input. The sofa’s chocolate-toned upholstery is a Maharam fabric originally designed by Alexander Girard in 1966. Personal touches are woven throughout the space. A painting by artist and friend Dan Climan tells the story of Sarah’s grandfather’s immigration from Italy to Canada.

Antique yellow doors salvaged from a century-old home add historical texture to the contemporary redesign. The back garden, equipped with a Bouroullec-designed Palissade dining set for HAY and Wedge’s own wooden benches, serves as a versatile space for casual client meetings or the team’s weekly pastry ritual. Upstairs, the atelier balances domesticity with productivity. Monitors and ergonomic chairs signal its function as a workspace, while industrial shelving showcases the products Wedge has brought to life. A large window frames the backyard, offering a dynamic natural view, while vintage Alvar Aalto chairs add a layer of design heritage.
