LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- As the festive Carnival season begins, Acadiana pauses with somber reflection.

At the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the American and Acadiana flags are being flown at half-staff, and the Lafayette Parish School System observes a moment of silence.

For 30 days, the two flags outside LCG fly at half-staff in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter who died at 100 on Dec. 29. Now, the flags serve to remember the victims of the New Year's Day New Orleans terror attack as well.

Lafayette Parish Schools Superintendent Francis Touchet said in a statement that "words cannot convey our sorrow for the tragedy that struck our state claiming the lives of 14 people, including Lafayette native Tiger Bech."

The moment of silence observed throughout the Lafayette Parish School System on Monday symbolizes LPSS's support for fellow Louisianans during this trying time, according to LPSS Communications Specialist Tracy Wirtz.

"Let everybody know that we are thinking about and praying for all of the victims of that horrific attack," Wirtz said.

The school system's moment of silence resonates far beyond its walls, sending a powerful message to other states of reflection and unity.

"As you look down the list of victims, you have people not just from Louisiana but our neighboring states who came here to have a good time," Wirtz said. "We want those families to know that we are grieving right alongside them. And they will continue to be in our thoughts and our prayers."
