Georgia man sentenced for Capital Region illegal firearm transfers
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A United States judge sentenced a Georgia man on Monday to five years in prison for transferring 29 illegal firearms to the Capital Region. Devon Newsome, 32, pleaded guilty in early September.
Through Newsome's guilty plea, he admitted to delivering 29 illegal handguns on May 21, 2023, to a New York resident in Georgia. Of the weapons, some were stolen and equipped with a machinegun conversion device.
The weapons were then transported to a residence on Western Avenue in Albany. Newsome also admitted to knowing neither he nor the person with the guns would be going to licensed manufacturers, dealers, or firearm collectors.
When police searched the Western Avenue home, they found a total of 34 illegal firearms, including the 29 Newsome admitted to transferring. In addition to his prison time, Newsome will also serve three years of probation.
Other defendants in the case include Anthony Luizzi who was sentenced on October 1, Brandon Bartley who was sentenced on September 24, and Jabree Jones who was charged with a violation of his parole. Jone's final revocation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, January 29.
