'What despots do': Liz Cheney hammers Trump's attempt to suppress Jack Smith report
Donald Trump's lawyers this week moved to block the United States Department of Justice from releasing special counsel Jack Smith's final reports regarding his criminal investigations and prosecutions of the president-elect.
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) on Tuesday blasted Trump for trying to suppress the final reports, which will deal with Trump's efforts to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 presidential election and his alleged obstruction of government efforts to retrieve top-secret government documents from his Mar-a-Lago resort.
"Trump is trying yet again to hide evidence and suppress the truth," Cheney wrote on X. "The Justice Department has obtained testimony and evidence from dozens of Trump’s former advisors and Vice President Pence showing the danger Trump poses. Now Trump is already doing what despots do— he is trying to conceal the truth and threatening to jail those who investigated him. The congressional report yesterday destroying Loudermilk’s fraudulent allegations shows the despicable malice behind Trump’s efforts."

Cheney then called on Merrick Garland to show fortitude and ignore calls to suppress the report in the name of purported national unity.
"AG Garland now has a duty to release the Justice Department Report and prevent its evidence from being destroyed," she argued. "The truth must prevail. The framers of our Constitution knew the lessons of history — that people led by men without character can quickly lose their freedom."
