Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla Weighs In After Patriots’ Jerod Mayo Firing

Joe Mazzulla and Jerod Mayo shared a special bond in comparing coaching styles across sports in the competitive Boston environment.

The Celtics coach appreciated his relationship with the now-former New England Patriots head coach after Mayo was fired at the conclusion of the season. Mazzulla took the podium for the first time since New England’s transaction and discussed the uncertainties of professional coaches.

“I think the first part is you don’t realize the impact it has on the assistants, on their families and the kids,” Mazzulla shared Tuesday, per CLNS Media. “To me, it’s bigger than just the head coach. You have assistants that believe in the head coach. You have assistants that move their families there. There’s people that are impacted by it. Second piece is, like you said, we’re hired to get fired. You enjoy it for as long as you can. After that, that’s it. It’s over.”

Mayo went just 4-13 in his lone season at the helm for the Patriots before owner Robert Kraft took full responsibility for pushing the former linebacker into a failing situation.

The Patriots lead their search for their third head coach in three years while Mazzulla keeps the Celtics on schedule after some adversity in December.
