UN seeks $179 million for Afghanistan humanitarian aid in 2025

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan has reported that approximately 5.8 million people in the country will require immediate shelter and non-food items in 2025. Meeting these needs will require $179 million in funding.

In a report released on Tuesday, January 7, OCHA stated that over five million people are in need of emergency assistance, with 1.1 million identified as a priority group.

OCHA emphasized that flood-affected families, returnees, and those living in temporary accommodations are among the groups urgently requiring shelter.

This comes as international aid organizations have warned of increasing poverty and growing humanitarian needs across Afghanistan, particularly as winter intensifies.

The World Food Programme (WFP) also raised concerns on Monday about Afghanistan’s worsening economic crisis, noting that millions are in immediate need of assistance.

According to OCHA, an estimated 22.9 million people — nearly half of Afghanistan’s population — will need life-saving humanitarian aid in 2025.

Earlier, OCHA requested $2.42 billion to address the needs of vulnerable populations in Afghanistan this year.

The escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan underscores the urgent need for global solidarity. Donor nations and aid organizations must prioritize funding and coordinated efforts to provide life-saving support and prevent further suffering in the region.
