WATCH: The Quest To Rescue The World’s Largest CRT TV

As retro tech becomes increasingly en vogue, the heavy CRT TVs of yesteryear have become increasingly popular among enthusiasts, particularly gamers. In fact, one particular model of CRT, the Sony KX-45ED1 (also known as the PVM-4300) has achieved mythical status. The behemoth CRT is claimed to feature a 45-inch display and weigh over 400 lbs, but this has been difficult to confirm, due to the fact that there seems to be next to no first-hand experience with the model on the internet. Even photos of the model are nearly non-existent, save for a few old promotional images. This, combined with the fact that the KX-45ED1 was apparently sold in the late 1980’s for $40,000 (over $100,000 when adjusted for inflation), has made this CRT a legend that is whispered about in the TV-enthusiast corners of the internet.

Enter YouTuber Shank Mods. In a recently-uploaded video, Shank Mods goes into detail covering the cloudy history of the KX-45ED1 before documenting his journey to acquire one of the two existing units claimed to still be around. Without giving too much away, the YouTuber flies to the other side of the globe to rescue the mythical TV before the noodle restaurant in Japan that is housing it is set to be demolished.
