ISIS claims responsibility for assassination of cleric in Baghlan province

0

Two clerics were attacked by unidentified gunmen in Baghlan province on Tuesday. The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the assault.

Local sources in Baghlan province reported that armed assailants killed a pro-Taliban cleric and injured another in an attack on Tuesday night in Baghlan Markazi district. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to the reports, on the night of January 7, unknown assailants killed Abdul Razzaq, the imam of a mosque and a religious teacher, and severely injured Hamdullah Mohammadi, the Imam of a mosque Baghlan Markazi district. Hamdullah’s condition is reported to be critical.

This is not the first time ISIS has targeted clerics close to the Taliban. Previously, the group has assassinated Taliban-affiliated religious figures in Kabul and other parts of the country.

In one notable attack by ISIS in August 2022, Mawlawi Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, a prominent Taliban scholar, was killed in Kabul.

Despite repeated ISIS attacks, Taliban officials have consistently claimed that security is under control across Afghanistan and have denied the presence of ISIS in the country.
