Postecoglou makes interesting revelation on signing new Spurs left-back

Ange Postecoglou has indicated that Spurs will not sign a new left-back for the sake of it after Destiny Udogie’s injury, explaining that any signing would have to meet important criteria.

Reports indicate new left-back is a priority for Spurs

With Destiny Udogie now out with a hamstring injury, Spurs are down to the bare bones at left-back.

Two other players who can also operate in that position, Ben Davies and Micky van de Ven, are also currently on the mend, leaving Djed Spence as the only other option that Postecoglou can use.

It was revealed by Alasdair Gold last week that on the back of Udogie’s injury, adding a new left-back to the squad has become one of the Lilywhites’ transfer priorities this month.

Ange Postecoglou on whether Spurs will sign a new left-back

Postecoglou has now remarked that despite Udogie‘s injury, Tottenham will not be opportunistic in signing a left-back who happens to be in the shop window.

The Spurs boss made it clear that any signing would have to be from the list of targets the club had already identified as he only wants players who would be a good fit for his system.

When asked if Tottenham are looking to bring a left-back through the door, Postecoglou told Football.London: “It depends. We’re in a tricky situation where we’ve got – obviously Ben Davies can play left-back as well – so you know we’re in this tricky situation where potentially we could have three very, very good defenders coming back into the fold very, very quickly.

“Obviously, Destiny’s going to be a bit longer, so it’s a bit of a balancing act of how much we can get through. I just don’t want to get it [wrong]. You know, the beauty of bringing in somebody like Toni (Antonin Kisnky) was that he was part of our plans anyway.

“I’m really reluctant just to bring in another body just for the sake of it. It’s got to be somebody who either fits into what we’re doing or he’s going to help us straight away. They’re the kind of criteria we’re looking at.”

Not signing a left-back would be extremely negligent

One can understand what Postecoglou means. Ideally, the club should not settle for a backup option as it could prevent them from signing their top transfer target if he becomes available in the summer.

For instance, if Tottenham find out that Lecce are not willing to sell Patrick Dorgu this month but are willing to do so in the summer, it makes sense for the club to wait.

However, given the situation Spurs are in, it would be negligent of Postecoglou and the recruitment department to go into the rest of the campaign without at least a stop-gap solution in that position.

If Spence gets injured, the club are in big trouble as Ben Davies does not offer the dynamism that full-backs are expected to in Ange’s system.
