Driver OK after gunfire on Interstate 80 onramp in Hercules shatters car’s back window

HERCULES — A man escaped injury after somebody fired a gun at his vehicle as he tried to drive onto the freeway, authorities said.

The encounter happened Tuesday about 12:45 p.m.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Dan Gilmore said the 46-year-old man was on John Muir Parkway going toward westbound Interstate 80 when he heard at least two of the gunshots.

The gunfire shattered the back window of the man’s Chevrolet Silverado but did not hit him. Authorities said the Chevrolet was hit more than once.

According to Gilmore, the man saw a white Toyota sedan pass him on the left about the time the gunfire went off. Gilmore said the man was unsure whether the Toyota was the vehicle from which the gunfire came.

Hercules police also assisted on the incident after an officer conducting a security check at a nearby grocery store heard the shots and drove to the scene. The driver flagged down that officer just past the metering lights of the I-80 onramp.

The CHP said they took photos of the scene and that the investigation is continuing. They urged anyone with any information to contact their Contra Costa County office at 320investigations@chp.ca.gov or at 925-646-4980.
