Art Directors Guild Awards nominations include ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and more Oscar hopefuls

The Art Directors Guild Awards has announced the nominations for its 29th annual kudos, and all five of this year’s predicted production design Oscar nominees received bids from the guild on Thursday: The Brutalist and Gladiator II in the period race, Dune: Part Two and Wicked in the fantasy category, and Conclave in the contemporary contest.

This group, which celebrates excellence in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, and music videos, has an impressive track record for previewing the Academy Awards. Over the past 28 years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the ADG nominees in the various categories, including last year when Poor Things prevailed at both events.

This year’s honors will be distributed on Feb. 15 during a ceremony hosted by comedian and actress Rachael Harris at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. (See the complete list of names below.) Final voting for guild members opens on Jan. 27 and closes on Feb. 13.

The remaining period nominees are A Complete UnknownNosferatu, and Saturday NightAlien: RomulusBeetlejuice, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga round out the fantasy lineup. The other contemporary contenders are Civil WarEmilia PérezThe Substance, and Twisters.

On television, Emmy and Golden Globe favorites such as Shōgun and Hacks received today’s recognition from the Art Directors Guild, whereas other well-liked shows like The Bear and Baby Reindeer did not make the list.

This year’s Cinematic Imagery Award will be presented to filmmaker Jason Reitman, whose features include Juno, Up in the Air, and the current hit Saturday Night. In addition, the ADG will celebrate Lisa Frazza, Barbara Mesney, Dan Sweetman, and J. Dennis Washington with Lifetime Achievement Awards, and legendary production designer Carl Jules Weyl will be inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame.

Ceremony producers Michael Allen Glover and Megan Elizabeth Bell said, “This year’s nominees showcase the incredible artistry and vision that define our craft and our industry. We’re thrilled to bring the Guild together to celebrate the achievements of these incredible Production Designers and their Art Departments.”
