Barcelona want to sign Tottenham star but they have a big problem

Barcelona were sensing an opportunity to secure the services of one senior Tottenham man at the end of the current season – but they have a big problem now.

Tottenham extend Heung-min Son’s contract

At the start of this campaign, most Spurs fans would have expected the club to swiftly offer Heung-min Son a new long-term contract.

However, such an offer has not arrived so far, which is a decision perhaps influenced by the Tottenham captain‘s poor form this season.

Spurs were always well protected though, as although Son’s contract was set to run out in June of this year, they had the option to extend it by one year.

Earlier this week, Tottenham triggered that clause and extended Son’s stay in North London to at least the summer of 2026.

Some outlets have claimed over recent months that the forward and his representatives are not too happy that the Lilywhites have not yet offered a long-term deal, with few clubs thought to be circling over the South Korean.

Barcelona were eyeing a move for Heung-min Son

According to a report in El Nacional (as relayed by The Sun), Barcelona were eyeing a move for the Spurs captain at the end of the season.

It was pointed out that, before the contract extension, Son was free to talk to foreign clubs and even agree on a pre-contract agreement with them as he was down to the final six months of his deal.

The Catalan side are thought to be looking at potential free options for next summer due to their financial issues and they allegedly identified the Tottenham man as one of their top targets.

Barcelona will not be able to sign Son on a free transfer

Tottenham were always going to extend Son’s contract in North London. Even if – and this is unlikely – Spurs wanted to get rid of the South Korean, they would still have extended the deal to protect his value.

There is thus no chance that Barcelona or anyone else would be able to sign the 32-year-old on a free transfer until at least 2026. However, we still believe that Spurs could enter into talks with Sonny over a new two-to-three-year deal now that the extension is announced.
