One can understand why Spurs were reportedly keen on securing Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens as the 20-year-old’s pace and quality on the ball make him a natural fit for Ange Postecoglou‘s system.

However, based on the reports over the past 24 hours, it appears that the Lilywhites are about to miss out on the young defender.

Several sources have claimed that Tottenham are unlikely to pay Lens’ asking price for the centre-back, while Man City have told the French club they are willing to do so.

Tottenham upset by what Lens have done

TBR Football have now revealed that Tottenham had their eye on Khusanov since October and have been watching the defender’s performances closely over the last few months.

It is revealed that they and Newcastle were both initially quoted a price of £16.6m for the centre-back when they first approached Lens, who indicated that they would be happy to sanction a sale at that price.

However, the Ligue 1 club have suddenly decided to push up the price to £33.3m plus add-ons, with Spurs and the Magpies both said to be unhappy with this development.

Who will Spurs turn their attention to?

If it is true that Tottenham have abandoned their pursuit of Khusanov due to the price increase, it remains to be seen who has now emerged as their top centre-back target.

Over recent days, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ko Itakura has been mentioned as one of the names on Spurs’ radar, but the Japanese defender is a slightly different profile to the Lens man.

It is also worth wondering if Archie Gray‘s increasingly solid displays at the heart of defence will change Tottenham’s plans regarding who to pursue.
