Cold winter prompts heat compliance for NYC buildings
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- We still have a lot of winter left and bitterly cold temperatures ahead. For years PIX11 New’s Monica Morales has been fighting for your heat and hot water.
This winter there are more than 350 inspectors in your neighborhoods making sure people feel their heat.
There are more than 80,000 heat complaints this winter. PIX11 News got an exclusive one-on-one with the person in charge of a team of city inspection teams.
This year heat complaints are up, so these crews are working overtime to help you feel your heat. Teams from the New York City Housing Preservation and Development are helping keep more than a hundred thousand HPD buildings, not including NYCHA, warm this winter.
Every winter for 8 months, From Oct. 1 through May 31, New York City property owners are legally required to keep indoor temperatures at 68 degrees or higher when outside temperatures drop below 55 degrees during the day that's from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
At night regardless of the outside temperature, buildings must be maintained at 62 degrees.
