Storm Eowyn is set to bring gusts of up to 90mph to parts of the UK, with the Met Office issuing an amber weather warning for strong winds.

The storm could cause flying debris, power cuts, transport problems and danger to life.

There is also the potential for some travel disruption impacting roads, railways, airports and ferries.

The amber weather warning for wind is in place for Northern Ireland, the north of Wales, the north of England and south of Scotland from 6am on Friday until 9pm.

All parts of the UK have been issued with separate yellow weather warnings for wind on Friday as well.

For the east of England and London, this is in place from 5am on Friday until 3pm and for the south and north of England, Wales, Midlands and Scotland and Northern Ireland it is in place from midnight until 11.59pm.

The south west of England and parts of Wales are also under a yellow rain warning on Friday between midnight and 9am and parts of Scotland have been issued with a yellow snow warning from 3am until 12pm on the same day.

The strong winds will start in the south west of England and will quickly spread north east to other parts of the country by mid-morning.

A yellow weather warning for wind is also in place in Scotland from midnight on Saturday until 3pm on the same day.

Meanwhile on Thursday, there is a yellow warning for wind covering southern parts of England and Wales between 7am and 6pm.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: ‘Storm Eowyn will bring a period of very unsettled, potentially disruptive, weather to the UK through Friday and into Saturday.

‘The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, northwestern Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas.

‘There will also be some heavy rain, bringing some unpleasant conditions to end the week.

‘The initial warning for Storm Eowyn has been issued several days in advance, so it’s important to stay up to date with the forecast as further details emerge in the coming days.’

A Met Office spokesperson warned in relation to the amber warning: ‘This will bring a spell of very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph fairly widely inland, 70-80 mph in some areas, and 80-90 mph along more exposed coasts and hills (perhaps even higher in a few locations).’

Eowyn is the first named storm of 2025 and the fifth named storm to hit the UK since the end of October.

The Met Office has issued some handy tips for people impacted by Eowyn.

This includes recommending to people to check road conditions before driving off in the storm.

People are advised to gather essential items like torches, batteries and a mobile phone power packs in case of power cuts.

The Met Office also warned that ‘even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea’.
