Greece tourist tax: What is it and how much do I have to pay to stay in the mainland and on Greek islands?
HOLIDAYS to Greece are going to be more expensive as tourists are set to be hit with raised taxes in 2025.
Visitors may be paying up to £46 more than they would have on a trip in 2024. But why has the tax been increased and where will tourists have to pay the tax?
Why is the tourist tax increasing?
The Greek government has raised the tourist tax across the country because they hope that this will raise more money for local communities.
The money will also be used to fund climate change prevention and to ensure areas of Greece which are more vulnerable to wildfires and floods are prepared for the future.
In Greece, this has been seen as a positive move by the government as there have been several wildfires in recent years.
The new charged has also had its name changed to the climate tax, so that visitors know where their money is going.
How much is the tourist tax?
The amount you pay will be dependent on when you are travelling to Greece.
If you travel to the country between November and February, then your daily tax will be increasing to 2€ or £1.66.
That is an increase of 50 cents or 41p.
However, visiting in the high season will cost more.
The daily fee will rise to 8€ which is equivalent to £6.63 from April to October.
That could work out to £46 per person for a week long trip.
The tax must be paid on the islands and on the mainland.
Where do you pay the tourist tax?
The tourist tax needs to be paid at your accommodation site.
The cost is not included in the price of your flat, airbnb or hotel though.
Instead, it is an additional cost which you must pay up front.
