Morning Briefing: Cubs Acquire Ryan Pressly
Good morning, Mets fans!
The Cubs have acquired two-time All-Star closer Ryan Pressly from the Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Juan Bello. Pressly agreed to waive his no-trade clause under the condition that Chicago makes him the team’s closer. Houston will also send along cash to cover some of the 36-year-old’s $14 million salary. The right-hander spent 2024 serving as the primary setup man for closer Josh Hader. Pressly finishes his Astros career with a 2.81 ERA and 111 saves over seven seasons. He also racked up 14 saves in the postseason and secured the final out of the 2021 ALCS, 2022 ALCS, and 2022 World Series.
As for Bello, he spent 2024 in Class-A Myrtle Beach, posting a 3.21 ERA with 91 strikeouts against 28 walks in 89 2/3 innings.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday that the Cardinals are hesitant to give out long-term contracts to free agents, hoping to give Chaim Bloom flexibility when he takes over for John Mozeliak after the 2025 season. The club has been trying to trade Nolan Arenado all offseason – one of three players with a contract guaranteed beyond 2025. The other two players – Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras – declined to waive their no-trade clauses earlier in the offseason.
In an appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, Jack Flaherty said some clubs have reached out to him during his free agency, but he’s yet to receive a formal offer. Flaherty cited a lot of teams being complacent with their current rosters as a reason why teams aren’t being as aggressive on the market.
