Former Trump staffer thinks Trump's latest talking point is serving as a big distraction

One of Donald Trump's former White House staffers wondered if he is playing politics with the Washington, D.C. plane crash to distract from the poor performance of three of his Cabinet appointees.

Co-host Sunny Hostin pointed to Trump's statement during his press conference Thursday alleging that diversity hiring was responsible for the crash. When pressed on it, Trump said he only knows that because of "common sense." But Hostin named the list of positions that Trump has eliminated that deal with air safety.

"I think that that is very telling. When, you know, voters decide that they want someone to blow things up and they want someone to blow up infrastructures, this is the result," said Hostin. "You cannot blow up infrastructures and take people that have real experience in these types of issues and think that good things will happen because of it."

But it was Alyssa Farah Griffin who feared the only reason Trump was talking about DEI was to distract from the bad hearings by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard and Kash Patel before their respective committees.

"One of the things that bothers me about Trump in that I've expressed in the lead-up to this election is he floods the zone," she said. "We should be calling this out. This is a worthy discussion, but there were also yesterday incredibly important and consequential confirmation hearings happening on Capitol Hill."

She pointed to Gabbard's hearing, noting that a lot of people will know about Trump and DEI but they won't know that Gabbard was asked five times whether Edward Snowden committed treason when he publicly revealed classified secrets and fled to Russia for protection. It's an important question for senators as Gabbard will oversee the nation's top secrets.

"I don't think this is a strategy for Donald Trump, per se, but it has this unintended consequence of people then not paying attention to things which will have real impacts on Americans because they're so caught up in the crazy of the news cycle and how he floods the zone," Griffin explained.

"So people need to pay attention," she urged.
