Family, Friends of Downed Plane Pilot Speak Out After Crash
The crash of an American Airlines plane and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, D.C. on Jan. 30 has left countless families, friends, and loved ones in mourning as authorities search for remains of the 67 victims.
Friends and family of Captain Jonathan J. Campos, the pilot aboard American Eagle flight AA5342, have been paying tribute to the beloved aviator. His uncle Hector Campos told NBC News his nephew "was a great kid," and his girlfriend told WKMG he was "the love of her life."
Epic Flight Academy, where Campos was certified as a flight instructor and taught other pilots, shared their condolences in a Facebook post.
"He was a skilled and dedicated pilot with an undeniable passion for flying," the school said. "Our deepest condolences go out to Jonathan's family, friends, and all those who lost their lives or were impacted by this devastating tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time."
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where Campos studied aeronautical science and graduated in 2015, added to the condolences for the late pilot.
"Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Captain Jonathan Campos," a statement read. "Our thoughts are with his family and the families and loved ones of all impacted by this tragic accident."
A neighbor of the pilot in Ormond Beach, Florida told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that Campos was "a good guy" who would help his neighbors with car repairs. "It’s just sad,” the neighbor said. “As soon as they identified the aircraft on the news, I thought of Joni."

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
