Hamas confirms death of senior commanders Deif and Issa after 6 months

Hamas finally confirmed after about six months that Mohammad Deif, the senior commander of its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was killed.

In the statement, also acknowledged the deaths of Marwan Issa, the deputy commander of the Qassam Brigades, and several other prominent figures.

This statement was released on the same day that 110 Palestinian prisoners, including Zakaria Zubeidi, a prominent former commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, were exchanged for three Israeli hostages.

The Israeli military had announced in July last year that Mohammad Deif was killed in an airstrike on Khan Younis on July 23, but Hamas had refrained from confirming this until now.

Reuters reported on Thursday, January 30, that these two senior members of Hamas’s military wing were killed around six months ago in Israeli airstrikes.

According to the report, Hamas had kept their deaths secret until now. Although Israel claimed to have killed Mohammad Deif following an airstrike on the Khan Younis area in Gaza, Hamas did not confirm his death until recently.

Hamas referred to these two individuals as the main masterminds of the October 7, 2023, attack alongside Yehya Sinwar, the deceased leader of the group.

It’s important to note that during this attack, Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis. Since then, the conflict has led to at least 46,000 Palestinian deaths in a 15-month war.

The war also caused massive destruction, with nearly 90% of the Gaza Strip reduced to rubble.
