Paatal Lok Season 2 chose the beautiful and grand 138-year-old hotel, which was once the summer residence of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, as one of its main filming spots. According to the GQ India report, the Elgin Darjeeling, a luxurious five-star property built in the late 1800s, was originally owned by the Maharaja of Cooch Behar and was leased to several British families over time. However it was in 1965, Kuldip Chand Oberoi bought the property from the Maharaja of Cooch Behar and Nancy Oakley. Kuldip transformed the property into an opulent and luxurious hotel.
After Nripendra Narayan’s passing in 1911, the property was inherited by his son, Rajendra Narayan II, and was subsequently leased to British families like the Pavions and Oakleys.
According to a news report in NDTV, in 1965, Kuldip Chand Oberoi used his lifetime savings of Rs 3 lakh to buy The Elgin from Nancy Oakley, who had leased it. Oakley had been managing it as a guesthouse, which Oberoi had been renting. After Oakley’s departure to England, Kuldip Chand Oberoi established the “New Elgin Hotel” and registered it under his name as the sole proprietor.
