UK opens rehab center for teenage vapers

Data shows that almost a fifth of 11- to 18-year-olds in Britain have vaped, amid concerns about the long-term health impact

The British National Health Service (NHS) has opened a clinic to help teenagers quit vaping in an effort to tackle the growing use of e-cigarettes among young people, The Guardian reported on Tuesday.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool set up the service to support nicotine-dependent 11- to 15-year-olds in quitting e-cigarettes, and welcomed its first teenage patients last month. It is thought to be the first NHS service of its kind in England, according to the outlet.

Vaping among young people has surged in recent years in Britain, though recent data suggest the trend may be stabilizing. Figures released last year showed that 18% of 11- to 18-year-olds had vaped, down from 20% in 2023 but still higher than the 13% recorded in 2019. Additionally, 7.2% of children within that age group reported being current vapers last year, the article said.

The new clinic will focus on 11- to 15-year-olds – a group that vapes less frequently than older teenagers but has seen a continued rise in usage over the past year, The Guardian reported, citing a survey by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

”With the alarming rise in the number of children and young people turning to vaping and the significant uncertainty regarding the long-term impacts and potential harms of this trend, our clinic aims to provide crucial support for individuals affected by vaping,” Prof. Rachel Isba, a consultant in pediatric public health medicine at Alder Hey, told the outlet.

Treatment would be personalized for each individual and could involve nicotine replacement, therapy-based approaches to reduce vaping, and support addressing peer pressure and behavioral factors, according to the Alder Hey NHS trust.

Illegal vapes pose additional challenges. Research by the University of Bath carried out last year showed that one in six vapes confiscated in English schools contained the highly addictive “zombie drug” spice. Analysis of 596 vapes from 38 schools across London, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and South Yorkshire found the drug in nearly 100 devices.

In Russia, the parliament proposed a law last year that would prohibit the sale of nicotine and vaping products to teens in a bid to curb new addictions. The draft law would make it illegal to sell cigarettes, vapes, and similar goods to anyone born after December 31, 2009.

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier urged young people to stay away from e-cigarettes. They are harmful and don’t make users look “cool,” Putin said, noting that real achievements in sports or academia are far more important.
