CoLA get greenlight on £3.2m basketball facility
City of London Academy Southwark are going to have a new purpose built basketball facility added to the school within the next 12 months the school has announced this morning.
Featuring two courts with a cross court show court, seating for 450, and changing rooms, the new venue will give the programme a dedicated space to grow.
“For many of us, the engagement in competitive sports remains the lasting memory of our childhood,” CoLA Principle Mike Baxter wrote on LinkedIn in this morning.
“That’s why I’m delighted to announce that City of London Academy Southwark has recently had approved a £3.2million bespoke basketball arena to build upon the already sector-leading accomplishments of our basketball academy.
“Thank you to City of London Academies Trust , Dan Clark of GB Basketball, Ire Ozzy-Momodu of Team GB, Sam Japhet-Mathias and Ann Hodgetts for your testimonies on the day.
“We look forward to working with Ball Hall to get this over the line in the next 12 months.”
Founded in 2013 by Jackson Gibbons, the academy has gone from strength to strength, impacting over 2500 lives through basketball, while winning over 30 national titles, and sending over 80 players to the US on scholarship.
“The collective investment and vision from so many people on this project and CoLA Basketball as a whole is unreal,” CoLA Basketball Academy Director Jackson Gibbons said.
“Amazing things can be achieved when people truly care about the development of our young people. So grateful for all those involved! This is a vision that has been 9 years in the making, the original plans were drawn up in 2016.
“The vision has always been to provide more opportunities for the local community and basketball as a whole. We are so grateful for people believing in that vision.”
The work is targeted to be complete by February 2026.
