New Delhi: In the upcoming 24 hours, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir will be eagerly anticipating the outcomes of the scans conducted on star bowler Jasprit Bumrah at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Bumrah experienced back spasms during the last Test of India’s tour in Australia last month and has since been sidelined.

The Times of India reports that an update on Bumrah’s fitness is expected within the next 24 hours. Following this update, discussions about the next steps will take place with the BCCI. Additionally, the results of the scans will be sent to Dr. Rowan Schouten, a New Zealand orthopedic surgeon who performed surgery on the Indian fast bowler in 2023 after he sustained a back injury.

Bumrah had a minor impact in the fifth Test match against Australia, where India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a score of 1-3. Additionally, he has not been included in the Indian team for the current ODI series against England.

The 31-year-old may have the opportunity to assess his readiness for the Champions Trophy 2025 by participating in the third ODI, contingent upon his fitness evaluation.

“Obviously, we are waiting on some update about his scan and stuff which was due to happen in the next few days. Once we get that scan, we will be able to give you more clarity on where he is,” Rohit had said ahead of the first ODI.

Bumrah is included in India’s team for the Champions Trophy, with the final squad submission deadline set for February 12. India will begin their tournament on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai.

India faces concerns regarding Bumrah’s fitness, but Virat Kohli is also managing a knee problem that kept him from participating in the first ODI against England on Thursday. Nonetheless, the team is optimistic about his availability for the second match scheduled in Cuttack on Sunday.

“It’s nothing serious. He’ll definitely be back for the second ODI,” Shubman Gill said on Thursday.
